KGM Celebrates 70th Anniversary

KGM Celebrates 70th Anniversary

KGM Motors, formerly SsangYong, is proud to commemorate seven decades of automotive innovation. Celebrating a rich legacy that began with modest origins in the Ha Dong-Hwan Motor workshop in 1954, KGM Motors holds the distinction of being the only manufacturer in Korea that is exclusively dedicated to the production of SUVs and 4x4 vehicles.

Renowned for its pioneering spirit and commitment to crafting award-winning vehicles, the company has a long history of innovation and has remained at the forefront of automotive engineering. The manufacturer initially began producing trucks, buses and special-purpose vehicles for the export market, establishing the strong and reliable DNA of its products on the market today.

Over the years, the company evolved into the highly renowned SsangYong Motor Company before transitioning to its current name, KGM Motors – “Korean Genuinely Made”. Throughout this journey, the brand has maintained a steadfast commitment to advancing the boundaries of what is possible in the SUV and 4x4 market and continues to evolve, leading the charge with a range of awarding-winning vehicles.

Driven by a passion for innovation and a commitment to mastery in the sector, KGM Motors continues to push the boundaries in automotive design and engineering. With a focus on crafting its key components and cutting-edge engines, the company is proud to unveil an exciting roadmap of new models projected through the mid-2020s. This includes a renewed emphasis on eco-friendly engines and the introduction of models powered by pure-electric drivetrains, further solidifying KGM's position as a developer in sustainable mobility.

At the heart of KGM Motors' product portfolio are vehicles that embody the brand's new design philosophy of 'Powered by Toughness,' combining rugged durability with sophisticated design and cutting-edge technology. From the multi-award-winning Musso pickup and Rexton to the latest additions like the Torres in a 1.5 petrol variant and the Torres EVX pure electric variant, each vehicle exemplifies KGM's unwavering commitment to quality, performance, and innovation.

Looking ahead, the brand continues to develop concept models in collaboration with BYD, utilising BEV-dedicated platforms. The production of models such as a new BEV pick-up truck and a new BEV mid-sized SUV is expected to commence in the first half of 2025, marking another milestone in KGM's journey towards a more sustainable future.

The headquarters for KG Mobility is in the Gangnam district of Korea’s capital, Seoul, and its principal vehicle manufacturing plant is currently at Pyungtaek, which has the capacity and latest technology to produce 240,000 cars a year. The company has invested in a new factory, in the same area, which has been developed specifically to accommodate the production of pure-electric vehicles.

Closer to home in the UK, the transition to KGM Motors represents a transformative milestone for the brand, ushering in a new era of progression and redefining the company's product vision for the future. The brand has a realistic growth strategy and a firm focus on the expansion of an evenly spread 80-strong dealer network by the end of 2024.

On the occasion of KGM Motors' 70th anniversary, the company reaffirms its dedication to strive towards a future of more intelligent, secure, and sustainable mobility than ever before.
